Transplant Peer Mentors: A New Approach to Enhancing the Patient Experience

When:
Thursday, February 27, 2020
3:00-4:00pm ET/ 12:00pm - 1:00pm PT

Purpose/Goal:

The patient experience of organ transplantation may seem singular and unique for a newly diagnosed patient. Incorporating peer to peer support within a transplant program enhances the patient’s learning experience by providing support from a fellow patient who can share their personal journey. This webinar will explore the development of a vibrant peer mentor program at a large transplant center and discuss the infrastructure and peer volunteer support needed to sustain such a program. Two active peer mentors will share their personal experiences and highlight the impact of peer-to-peer support of transplant recipients and living donors across the transplant journey.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the known patient benefits of peer support for individuals with chronic illness and organ transplant.
  • Outline steps to operationalize and sustain a transplant center wide peer mentor program.
  • Describe the experiences of peer mentoring through the personal accounts of two organ transplant recipient peer mentors.

Moderator/Speakers:

  • Colleen Satarino, LMSW
  • Ruth Halben, LMSW
