Strategies for Success: Navigating Access to Electronic Medical Records

Tuesday, November 5, 2019
2:00-3:00pm ET/ 11:00am - 12:00pm PT

The widespread adoption of Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) has significantly limited the ability of Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) to assess the medical suitability of potential organ donors. Furthermore, obtaining federally mandated access to hospital EMRs has been challenging for OPOs nationwide. Joint access enables streamlined communication between the healthcare team and OPO, improves the quality of patient care, and, ultimately, prevents delays that can lead to recipients not receiving life-saving transplants. This webinar will share the dual perspective of two OPOs who have successfully overcome common challenges faced when obtaining access, onboarding new staff, maintaining access for coordinators, and tackling a systemic approach to EMR access for their organization.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Identify key EMR champions to establish OPO access and how to communicate what level of access is needed.
  • Recognize the barriers in obtaining EMR access from the OPO perspective and discuss strategies to work though hospital requirements for access.
  • Develop resources for OPO staff on how to maintain their access, as well as, how to navigate EMR systems on various platforms.
  • Adjust internal OPO structure to effectively meet OPO and hospital stakeholder needs.
