Pediatric Organ Donation and Donor Management

Tuesday, February 5, 2019
2:00-3:00pm EST/ 11:00am - 12:00pm PST

Pediatric organ donation and transplantation can provide a significant life-saving benefit to both pediatric and adult patients. Because children comprise such a small subgroup of organ transplant recipients, it is common for organs recovered from pediatric donors to be transplanted in adult recipients. During this webinar, the impact of pediatric organ donors on the adult waiting list will be highlighted, along with the UNOS policies that are specific to pediatric candidates on the waiting list. Additionally, brain death diagnosis and donor management challenges that are unique to a pediatric organ donor will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Outline the impact of pediatric organ donation on the adult transplant waiting list.
  • Summarize UNOS policies specific to pediatric transplant candidates.
  • Discuss issues associated with diagnosing brain death in pediatric patients.
  • Identify challenges in preserving the option of organ donation in critically ill pediatric patients.

  • Thomas A. Nakagawa, MD, FAAP, FCCM
  • Marty Sellers, MD MPH (Moderator)
