Frailty and Cognitive Impairment in Kidney Transplantation

Purpose/Goal:

As the number of older patients referred for kidney transplantation continues to rise; transplant centers are faced with the challenge of determining which of these patients are appropriate candidates for transplantation. Medical evaluations help guide clinicians in their decision making, but can sometimes fall short in determining risk of poor outcomes. Reliance on gerontologic measures of frailty and cognitive function to help identify ideal candidates in the pre-transplant setting is growing. In this course we will review the evidence for measuring frailty and cogitation and discuss the strengths and limitations of different gerontologic tools.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:

Identify tools to measure frailty during transplant evaluation.
Describe how to incorporate frailty testing in the pre-transplant evaluation.
List the many different tests of cognition and identify which is most appropriate for transplant evaluation.
