Frailty and Cognitive Impairment in Kidney Transplantation

Purpose/Goal:
As the number of older patients referred for kidney transplantation continues to rise; transplant centers are faced with the challenge of determining which of these patients are appropriate candidates for transplantation. Medical evaluations help guide clinicians in their decision making, but can sometimes fall short in determining risk of poor outcomes. Reliance on gerontologic measures of frailty and cognitive function to help identify ideal candidates in the pre-transplant setting is growing. In this course we will review the evidence for measuring frailty and cogitation and discuss the strengths and limitations of different gerontologic tools.
