To honor a patient’s First-Person Authorization (FPA) wishes is to honor life through the gift of donation. Despite the increased support of donation in the United States, there remains a wide knowledge gap with the legal impact of FPA and how it is carried out. Hospitals and OPOs are obligated to support FPA but struggle to do so when faced with resistance. Where do you start? What protocols should be established in order to honor a patient’s wishes? The goal of this webinar is to prepare both the hospitals and OPOs for FPA cases and to share best practices on how to successfully and collaboratively overcome FPA resistance.

Target Audience:
Members of the donation and transplantation community serving diverse populations to include administrators, coordinators, physicians, nurses, surgeons, managers, quality improvement specialists, social workers, and other donation and transplantation center professionals and their colleagues.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Identify tools and resources to support First Person Authorization cases
  • Define critical times in the referral process to initiate an escalation protocol
  • Summarize the impact of having a proactive escalation plan
  • Explain the collaboration process between the hospital and OPO when there is FPA resistance
